Watches and other timepieces that can be carried on one's person are usually not referred to as clocks. This distinction is not generally made any longer. Traditionally, in horology (the study of timekeeping), the term clock was used for a striking clock, while a clock that did not strike the hours audibly was called a timepiece. ![]() A major advance occurred with the invention of the verge escapement, which made possible the first mechanical clocks around 1300 in Europe, which kept time with oscillating timekeepers like balance wheels. Water clocks, along with sundials, are possibly the oldest time-measuring instruments. There is a range of duration timers, a well-known example being the hourglass. Players are also tasked with finding relics, of which there are over 40 in the game. There’s more than just finding treasure this time around, though. Digging, finding treasure, selling it, and purchasing upgrades in SteamWorld Dig 2 is one of the most addictive gameplay cycles I’ve ever experienced. This sense of progression is one of the biggest reasons why I found myself unable to put the game down until either I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore, or my Switch’s battery ran out. Just when you think you’ve gotten comfortable with Dig 2’s mechanics, the game throws a fresh, new ability at you to master. The rate at which you unlock new abilities and upgrades for Dot feels more natural as a result. Upon first learning of this fact, I was initially worried, but a more structured and carefully designed world means that the developers were more intentional about the game’s pacing. Unlike the first game, Dig 2’s underground labyrinths aren’t randomized. The plot is much more engaging this time around, and I found myself growing attached to the heroes the deeper I dug in. I won’t spoil the story here, but I will say the writing is wonderfully witty, and there’s an intriguing air of mystery hanging around Dig 2’s subterranean caverns. While the gameplay has been refined, you’re still mostly whacking away at the dirt and stone with your pickaxe, creating underground paths to navigate as the new protagonist, Dot (a side character from the original) and her sprite-like guide, Fen, attempt to learn the fate of Dig’s main character, Rusty. Even better, the voicings here are among the most exceptional and pleasurable of any animated film you might care to name. The wild beauty of Scotland, of the verdant forests and the craggy peaks, is lovingly rendered with a gorgeous palette of painterly colors and in very agreeable 3D. On a sensory level, however, Brave is almost entirely a delight. Not only is the tale laden with standard-issue fairy tale and familiar girl-empowerment tropes, but the entire project lacks the imaginative leaps, unexpected jokes and sense of fun and wonder that habitually set Pixar productions apart from the pack. What results is a film that starts off big and promising but diminishes into a rather wee thing as it chugs along, with climactic drama that is both too conveniently wrapped up and hinges on magical elements that are somewhat confusing to boot. ![]() Thus ensues a lot of not-so-hot slapstick as bear Elinor knocks about in quarters too small for her and tries to communicate while Merida feels remorse and endeavors to reverse the spell. ![]() The spell, lo and behold, turns Elinor into an enormous bear, one that retains Elinor’s brain and heart but cannot speak. But it’s a move that channels the film into startlingly well-worn territory, that of a conventionally toothless and whiskered old witch ( Julie Walters) willing to cast a spell to grant Merida’s wish to change her mother so as to alter her own fate. The left-turn taken by the script co-authored by Mark Andrews, Steve Purcell, Brenda Chapman and Irene Mecchi, from a story by Chapman, who co-directed with Andrews, might be embraced by those comforted by the familiar. It stands to reason that this first half-hour sets up expectations of a story in some way involving a renegade princess, trouble among the clans and/or a mysterious adventure involving the wisps and some Stonehenge-like arrangements that come into play. VIDEO: Full ‘Brave’ Trailer: Pixar Shows Off Scotland and an Epic, Animated Hairdo Once Merida shows them all up in an archery contest and her furious mother tosses her daughter’s prize bow in the fireplace, the headstrong girl takes off on her enormous steed, Angus. One look at the top suitors offered up by the three other leading clans and you can see what she means they’re the three stooges of Scotland, whose beefy kinsmen would sooner brawl than shake your hand. As for marriage, nothing could be less appealing: “I don’t want my life to be over,” she rails to her mother. Under the strict tutelage of loving but demanding mother Elinor ( Emma Thomson), Merida has learned the necessities but is a wild lass at heart, desperate for her days off when she can ride off on horseback and perfect her archery. After a beautiful and eventful prologue in which flaming-maned Scottish princess Merida ( Kelly Macdonald) receives an archery bow for her birthday, glimpses blue will-o’-the-wisps floating through the forest and sees her father, King Fergus ( Billy Connolly), lose a leg to a ferocious bear, the action jumps ahead to her adolescence and her obligation to get married. Part of the problem is that Brave never becomes the film that seems to be promised at the outset. ![]() PHOTOS: 28 of Summer’s Most Anticipated Movies: ‘Avengers,’ ‘Dark Knight,’ ‘Prometheus’ ![]() ![]() ![]() Swinsian is a sophisticated music player for Mac OS X with wide format support, folder watching and advanced tag editing and designed to be . (How many people's email addresses do you have memorized?) When I clicked on an email address on a web page, or from my address book, or any other source, it launched my default mail client.ģ) "Write and save email drafts somewhere other than my mail client, then copy/paste them into my mail client later." I tried keeping email drafts in nvALT when I wasn't checking email, and then when I was ready to check email, I would copy each message into a new "Compose" window, and send it. It seemed like the ideal solution: press F12, write an email, click send, voilà! But, at least for me, any system which depends on sheer force of will is like building a sandcastle at the beach. Everything is sorted to where it belongs, and when the time comes I can check by various folders (sorry, "labels") later on. I have an extensive and elaborate set of Gmail filters which almost guarantee that nothing ends up in my Inbox directly. ![]() Most of the time I am very good about that. Hey look, new email!ġ) "Just ignore it." Ideally this wouldn't be a problem because by sheer force of will I could just ignore messages which are unread and untended. Quitting my email app was easy, but then a few minutes later I realized that I needed to send an email. (Merlin Mann recently mentioned this problem on an episode of Back To Work, which is what reminded me about it.) I ran into this problem when I tried to start checking email once or twice a day. What was I going to tell him?" Now hopefully your brain works better than mine does (I did eventually remember the original message I was going to send), but if you have ever tried to get into the habit of checking email less often you might have run into this same problem:Įmail apps expect that when you want to send email you also want to check email. I read the message, I started to think about what I needed to do in response to it, and other people I need talk about it.Īlmost 30 minutes went by before I remembered, "Didn't I come over here to start writing an email to someone? Steve. But my brain had already started thinking and processing. If I had just gone to bed without checking my email, I would have seen it the next morning when I was at the office. To be clear, I couldn't really do anything about the message. Once I saw the From: line, it almost would have been worse not to read it, because then I would have been wondering what it said. I could have tried to ignore it, but my brain isn't fooled that easily. I saw a message from someone that I wished I hadn't seen. I remembered that I needed to send an email to someone so it would be there for them first thing in the morning, so I launched Gmail (actually Mailplane) as I started to formulate the message in my head as I waited for it to load. I even found a (partial) solution for iOS devices as well. How many times have you gone to send an email, only to be distracted or even derailed by something that you found in your Inbox? I found a solution which is completely free, integrates completely with OS X, and which guarantees that it won't happen to me again. ![]() ![]() ![]() The structure of my folders (“groups”) within DevonThink itself is the same as per our article on Organizing your Files and Folders: It’s a little slower, but hey, no data corruption. /bills – All regular bills, dated with company names and year/month./book summaries – Book summaries, subfolders for type (business, health etc)./fashion – Notes, documents and media related to fashion and style.processes and scripts – Various scripts or directions for things that I commonly do./personal – Various letters and documents (sorted into subfolders), notes on hobbies (e.g., boardgame tactics), miscellany./life management – Documents related to goals, stories, motivation./identity documents – Scans of commonly used identity documents, like my passport, driver’s licence etc./health – Subfolders for dentist, doctor, gym, insurance, physical therapy, test results./finances – Subfolders for banks, countries, types (insurance vs banking vs investments), financial planning stuff. profile photos – Some profile photos for uploading to various social media sites etc./roadmaps – Roadmaps for goals, system maps for areas of life./recipes – Kitchen recipes in text files./receipts – All receipts scanned and tagged with date and vendor.Think of them as recipes for things that are not food.
